Relaxing method-Get rid of Stress

Progressive muscle relaxation: Developed by Edmund Jacobson in the early 1920s. It may be an old way of relaxing but it’s still good for today’s thinking and will help to relax you.

Over the coming days I’ll write about other techniques to help you unwind and hopefully reduce your feelings of stress.

Jacobson’s technique sounds simple and with practice it can be.

Start by sitting in a comfortable chair. Close your eyes, clench your jaw tightly, hold for 10 seconds, relax for 20 seconds. Next, tighten your neck muscles, hold for 10 seconds, relax for 20 seconds. Move on to your shoulders – tighten your shoulder muscles, hold for 10 seconds, relax for 20 seconds.

Clench your fists and arms – hold for 10 seconds, relax for 20 seconds. Do the same for your upper legs, your lower legs, and lastly your feet. Hold each area tightly for ten seconds then relax.

The process only takes a few minutes at most.  Repeat two or three times. When you have finished, self-talk and tell your muscles to return to normal.

By the time you have finished much of the stress you are feeling should have diminished leaving you feeling rested.

If you have any medical problem that tensing your muscles may aggravate, please first check with your health provider before trying this technique.
